Edwards signs; kicker added

The Dallas Cowboys moved to shore up their defensive backfield on Tuesday by signing Mario Edwards to a one-year contract worth $1 million. They also signed kicker Swedish-born Ola Kimrin to a one-year deal.

Edwards, a sixth-round pick in 2000, started all but one game last season. He had two interceptions last year, both during the Thanksgiving Day game when Dallas defeated the Washington Redskins by the score of 27-20.

His deal, part of which is guaranteed, will make him an unrestricted free agent next season.

Edwards will join rookies Derek Ross and Pete Hunter, as well as recently-signed Donald Mitchell from Tennessee. Due to the thin stock of cornerbacks on the roster, it was crucial that Dallas keep Edwards, who was visiting with the St. Louis Rams.

The Cowboys will likely take a cornerback in the NFL draft to help even more.

Kimrin went to training camp with the Denver Broncos last year, but was unable to unseat veteran Jason Elam. Prior to that, he spent two years in NFL Europe.

The Cowboys want to provide competition for Billy Cundiff, who hit only 12 of 19 field goals last season.
