The Cowboys continued dominance of the Washington Redskins didn’t come without a price as cornerback Pete Hunter and tight end Dan Campbell we placed on the injured reserve list Wednesday with season-ending injuries.
Campbell came up limping on his right foot after a crucial third down conversion play where he caught a pass to pick up the first down. Coming over from the Giants last season, he is considered the Cowboys’ best blocking tight end.
The injury could mean that Jason Witten will get more time or that tight end Jeff Robinson could see more action.
But Robinson is also the team’s long snapper. And the Cowboys have gone without his services before as he was lost in 2002 for the season with an injury.
Hunter went down after trying to make a cut in coverage. His injury was confirmed Wednesday after the MRI came back showing a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.
He is scheduled for surgery later in the week.
Jacques Reeves, a seventh-round pick from Purdue, replaced Hunter against the Redskins and has two weeks to get up to speed as the starter.
The Cowboys have a bye this week.
Rumors have swirled regarding the Cowboys trading for the services of Packers cornerback Mike McKenzie, who is unhappy in Green Bay.
Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said the Cowboys will sign a cornerback, but would not confirm any talks regarding McKenzie.
The Cowboys are looking at a few other young cornerbacks on practice squads for other teams.
For now, head coach Bill Parcells hopes that Reeves can fill the spot.
"We have some young kids that have to grow up," Parcells said.
