In response to losing cornerback Pete Hunter and tight end Dan Campbell for the season to injury, the Cowboys signed cornerback Tyrone Williams and tight end Mikhael Ricks to fill their roster spots.
Williams, selected by the Green Bay Packers in 1996 from Nebraska, then spent last season with Atlanta. He was not re-signed by the Falcons.
Jacques Reeves, a seventh-round draft choice in this year’s draft, is expected to start opposite Terrence Newman when Dallas plays next, a week from Sunday against the New York Giants. Williams would be a backup or could see some time playing in the slot.
Parcells had said in prior weeks that he had his eye on a couple of players that could help out the defense, and Williams was one of those players. Former Packers general manager Ron Wolf is a close friend of Parcells – he visited the Cowboys training camp this year – and game Williams a good recommendation.
"(Parcells) talked to Ron and Ron Wolf was like a father figure to me," Williams said. "For him to speak to him for me, I have to live up to that."
Ricks had been released by the New York Jets last month. Where Campbell was a better blocker, Ricks is more a receiver.
Head coach Bill Parcells may have to use more of a two-back offense to provide a lead blocker for the running game instead of having that blocking tight end.
